We swallow throughout the day when we eat, drink, and even to remove excess saliva from the mouth. We often take this type of action for granted, that is until we have problems with it. Acid reflux can develop due to a variety of problems that are worth examining.

Weak Muscles

There are valves that open and close as you take in food and when you swallow. They need to be closed to keep those items in your digestive track. If they don’t work like they should though they can allow acid to leak back into the esophagus. This can also cause the esophagus to become irritated and inflamed. That is a huge problem because then chronic acid reflux can be the result.

Diet Choices

Individuals that consume large amounts of chocolate, caffeine, or spicy foods tend to have more problems with acid reflux. When these items are part of the daily eating habits it can become very hard to link what is really responsible. In order to find out you need to cut them out of your diet for a two week period. Then you can add them back in small amounts. If your symptoms come back then you need to stop consuming them once again.

Smoking

If you smoke then you are doing damages to your internal body functions. The sphincter in the lower part of the esophagus can become damaged and not function properly. Someone that smokes heavily or over a long period of time will be likely to experience more problems with acid reflux.

Drinking Alcohol

Consuming alcohol also damages the lining of the digestive tract. This is why people that frequently consume alcohol also have more problems with acid reflux. The more then drink and the more frequently, the more acid the body is going to end up producing.

Being Overweight

Studies show that individuals that are overweight are more likely to suffer from acid reflux as well. The body has to work harder when you carry around extra weight. Acid reflux can occur due to the volume of acid that is produced to break down food. If you overeat then more of it is produced.

Stress

Too much stress in your life can also create issues with acid reflux. The body can produce extra acid in response to the chemical changes in the body and the brain. Reducing your stress level is important as a method of helping to reduce problems with acid reflux.

Ironically, someone that is dealing with chronic acid reflux will be stressed out of that. This can result in a continuous cycle for them so you have to find ways to break out of that routine. Stress from your personal relationships, finances, and your job can all take a toll on you. Do all you can to keep such stress to a minimum.

Multiple Causes

For many people though there are multiple causes in their own life that increase the chances of acid reflux developing. If you fall into more than one category listed here then your chances of such health concerns significantly increase. Take action to change your risk factors and you will find that you don’t have heartburn as often. You will also find that when you do it isn’t nearly as severe.

However, that isn’t always enough to change the situation. You should talk to your doctor if you continue to have acid reflux once a week or more frequently. The damages to your esophagus can be very serious and you want to take early action to prevent them from becoming a huge problem.
