Heartburn and Pregnancy - How to Deal With It and Increase Comfort

A pregnancy can be a very exciting time in your life. However, it is also one where the body undergoes many changes. Heartburn can be a problem that prevents you from being able to rest properly. It can also be very painful and you certainly don’t want to suffer for several months like that. Since heartburn can also cause severe damage to the esophagus you need to take action.

Get Ready for Heartburn during Pregnancy

If you already have issues with heartburn you need to be ready for them to get worse during pregnancy. If you take medications to help offset it you need to talk to your doctor. There are certain types of heartburn medication that aren’t safe for you to take while you are pregnant.

You don’t want to put the baby at risk so make sure you are well aware of such limitations before you get pregnant. Over the counter antacids with calcium can offer some relief. Make sure you don’t take those that are high in sodium though.

For many women though they never have had a problem with it before. However, the changes of hormone levels and physical changes of the body can be what causes it. Most of the time the acid reflux goes away on its own after the baby is born. Yet that can be a long time to suffer from it. This can also prevent a woman from being able to get enough rest during her pregnancy.

Loose Clothing

Extra weight is one of the main causes of heartburn for most people. When you are pregnant it is natural that you are going to gain weight, especially during the second half of the pregnancy. Make sure the clothing you wear isn’t too tight around the abdominal area. Also, when you bend you should do so from the waist slowly.

Sleeping Habits

Lying on the back during sleep is also one of the triggers for more acid to get into the esophagus. Of course that is also one of the main positions for women to sleep in during a pregnancy. Try to sleep on your side if you are comfortable doing so. You should sleep with your head propped up several inches higher than your body. The use of extra pillows can help you to accomplish this.

Diet

Most women do eat very well while they are pregnant. They want to give their body as well as their baby the vitamins and nutrients that are needed. However, it is common for a woman to consume much more food in a day. This is especially true during the last trimester of the pregnancy.

Try to eat small meals throughout the day instead of consuming large amounts of food at once. Eat healthy snacks and avoid foods that are spicy or fried. Try to drink lots of water too as that will aid with proper digestion. Avoid citrus fruits and juices as they can significantly increase the amount of acid you end up with in your body.

Don’t Smoke

If you smoke it is very dangerous for the health of the fetus. Smoking can increase the risk of a baby being born early. It can also result in a low birth weight. When you smoke you will also have an increased chance of suffering from heartburn during the pregnancy.

Peppermint

Chewing peppermint gum or sucking on peppermint candy can help to reduce heartburn during a pregnancy. They help to promote more saliva and that will reduce the amount of acid that is produced. Try to do this every time you eat something so that the digestion process can be assisted.
