While problems
with acid reflux can affect you during the day, it is typically
at night when they create pain and suffering. As a result you
may not be getting the sleep you need. Then you wake up groggy,
irritable, and unable to concentrate. When acid reflux occurs
frequently you can’t continue to function like that. Take action
so that you can get a good night of sleep.
Diet
What you consume
during the day can affect acid production. Reduce your
consumption of greasy foods and spicy foods. Be cautious about
the amount of caffeine you consume too. Drinking soda, coffee,
and energy drinks can be spiking your intake of caffeine to
levels you aren’t aware of.
Eat small meals
throughout the day to aid in digestion. If you eat heavy meals
at night then you are more likely to suffer from acid reflux
when you try to sleep. Avoid eating anything for at least two
hours before you go to bed. Even something small can trigger
that acid to start developing before you go to bed.
Medications
If you take
medications for acid reflux, make sure you do so properly. Only
take the recommended dose of them. Many of them state for you to
take them early in the day or in the evening. If the product
says to take with food make sure you do so. Never take acid
reflux medication that is prescribed for someone else. Don’t
skip doses either as that can result in the medication not
working for you as effectively as it should.
Reduce Stress
As the evening
progresses your stress level may start to increase. You may be
wondering if you will be suffering from acid reflux that night.
If it occurs several times a week then it is understandable you
will have some anxiety. Hopefully, your diet and medications are
making the occurrences less frequent.
Do what you can to
relax such as taking a warm bath. Avoid consuming alcohol though
as a means of relaxing it. That is actually a trigger for more
acid to be produced in the body. Reading a book or thinking of
positive things in your life before you go to bed can also help
you to combat the stress.
Bedtime
Clothing
Avoid wearing
clothing to sleep in that is too tight. This is especially
something to be aware of around the waist. If your clothing is
binding too tightly there then it can be difficult for your body
to properly digest food. Wear clothing to bed that is loose
enough that you aren’t being restricted.
Sleep Habits
The way in which
you sleep can affect acid reflux as well. Sleeping on your right
side is going to reduce the acid flow. On the left side it will
also cut down on it. If you sleep on your stomach or your back
though it is going to allow that acid to creep back into the
esophagus.
Sleep with your
head about six inches higher than your body. You can prop it up
on pillows. There are also wedges designed specifically for this
purpose. You may consider a mattress too that you can adjust the
elevation level of. Some people find that if they also elevate
their shoulders higher than their body and then the head higher
than that they don’t get as much acid.
It can take some time to
find what works well for your body, so some experimenting may be part
of you getting back to sleeping well at night. You need to be in a
position that you will be very comfortable. At least 8 hours of
quality sleep each night is important for your ultimate level of
performance the next day.
