There are many different symptoms that a person may experience if they suffer from acid reflux. Someone could have all of the symptoms or they could have only a few of them. The symptoms can change from one day to the next too. A person that has acid reflux will typically experience these types of symptoms several times a week. They will also vary in the severity of them.

Pain

Heaviness in the chest region is very common when a person is suffering from acid reflux. It may feel like you have something very heavy sitting on your chest. If there is a burning sensation that is associated with the pain this is what people typically refer to as heartburn. Some people feel like they may be having a heart attack due to the severity of the pain in the chest area.

Acid reflux can also cause pain that is very deep in the abdomen. Sometimes the pain is in the throat as well. It all depends on where the acid is at any given point in time. When you lie down it is more likely to be in the back of the throat due to the position of the body.

Throat Problems

A dry cough may develop that is chronic, especially at night due to acid reflux. Difficulty with swallowing is also very common. A taste in the back of the throat that is very acidic and not very pleasant is often experienced. It can even cause someone to feel nauseated or to vomit if it is severe enough.

A feeling like you have a sore throat can linger for several days due to acid reflux. This is due to the acid leaving the lining of the throat very raw and irritated. Your throat may even be swollen due to the inflammation and this can make it very difficult to swallow.

Regurgitation

When acid is coming back into the throat that is referred to as regurgitation. It can leave a very terrible taste in the throat. Even after rinsing your mouth out or drinking something it can linger. The taste can be sour at times or very bitter, depending on what you ate and the amount of acid. Regurgitation can also result in burping occurring more frequently than normal.

Chronic Hiccups

While hiccups aren’t usually painful, they can be annoying. With acid reflux they can continue for very long periods of time. Drinking water, holding, your breath, and other remedies won’t give you freedom from them either. Chronic hiccups can start to be painful. They can also prevent you from getting a good night of rest.

Dry Cough

Another aggravating symptom of acid reflux is a dry cough. While this can occur at any point of the day, it is typically a night time symptom. When are trying to sleep is when it will be the worst. As a result you aren’t going to be able to get a quality night of resting. Drinking water can temporarily help but it won’t be enough to prevent it from returning.

Bloating

The abdominal area can become swollen due to acid reflux. This can result in your pants feeling too tight, heaviness, or it being very uncomfortable for you to sleep. The bloating can come and go or it can last for several days at a time.

Blood

If you notice blood in your stools or you are vomiting blood it can be the result of problems with acid reflux. Make sure you seek medical attention for any signs of blood. If this isn’t the cause of it there is something else wrong that you need to be paying attention to.
