To the left you can click on Liver Health and Colon Cleansing for two things you can do to detoxify. The liver is very key to your body's ability to remove toxins and toxins can build up in the colon. So dealing with these two items is important.

I don't believe in severe detoxing programs where you fast for seven days and just drink lots of water or drink only freshly made juices. I found that for people with blood sugar problems these radical cleanses will actually make you sicker. I have tried several of these types of detox programs and none of them made me feel any better. I also tried going vegan to cleanse my body and ended up feeling extremely cold all the time -- my body temperature dropped to about 97.6 and remained there -- and I began feeling jittery and weak. I agree that for some people these do work but I think for most of us they are disappointing.

I believe that detoxing is an ongoing process. You need to eat healthy, try as much as possible to live in a chemical and toxin free environment and keep your skin healthy and clean.nettles

Eating Healthy to Detox

Cut out all processed foods, fast foods and junk foods from your diet. Eat everything as fresh and as natural as possible. Don't eat refined sugar and limit healthy sugars such as real maple syrup and honey. Cut back on caffeine and stop drinking sodas, especially diet sodas. Diet sodas have synthetic sugars that are very toxic. You should only drink a limited amount of coffee or caffeine (one to two cups a day), drink lot's of water and herbal teas. If you don't have a blood sugar problem, drinking freshly made vegetable and fruit juices can be very cleansing. Get your own juicer or buy juices at your local health food store.

Your diet should be primarily fresh vegetables and fruits (very cleansing), nuts and seeds (good fiber content), whole grains, eggs and low fat meats. If you can, buy organic and free range meats and eggs. It's not only better for you but more humane for the animals as well. You cleanse your body by not eating toxic foods and by giving your body foods that build up the body and not tear it down. Vegetables are probably the best food you can eat for detoxing and nutritional value.

Don't be afraid to use saturated oils. They too can be very good for you. Good saturated oils include natural butter and organic coconut oil. Other good fats are extra virgin olive oil, which is great for liver health, and flaxseed oil. Don't listen to those who tell you that fat is bad. Bad fat is bad but good fat is highly beneficial.

Detoxing Your Environment

There are so many chemicals and toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis in our homes, where we work, in traffic and in the foods we eat. One of the main ways to detoxify the body is to eliminate as many toxins as you can out of your environment and out of your bodies. If you are exposed to fewer toxins, your body obviously will have much less to deal with and can function better.

Toxic products in your house are dishwashing soaps, laundry soaps, dryer sheets, so called air fresheners, cleaning products, etc. You are also exposed to highly toxic chemicals in your cosmetics, perfumes and deodorants. There are natural products for every chemically based product you use. You can find them at health food stores or on the Internet. I use Seventh Generation for most of my cleaning products. They have everything you need for the home.

There is not much you can do about detoxing your workplace. You may not have any control. I worked in a print shop exposed to chemicals all day long for nine years. It is probably the major reason I became chronically ill. For this reason you might consider looking for a different job if you are currently in a job that exposes you to toxic chemicals. It's not worth losing your health to keep your job. You might be able to work with your employer to help detoxify your workplace. A couple examples would be to ask if you can put an air purifier next to your desk or find out if there is a high quality mask you can wear if working in construction or around chemicals.

Detoxing Through the Skin

Not many people think about the skin when they think about detoxing. The skin, however, is the largest organ of the body and is responsible in eliminating toxins through the pores and by sweating. You can pull toxins from the body by taking an Epson salts bath or by using a far infrared sauna.

Epson Salts Bath -- Epson salts baths are very cleansing and can pull a significant amount of toxins from the body. Use one to two cups of Epson salts, a half a cup of baking soda and a half a cup of ginger powder in a hot bath. The bath should last no longer than 30 minutes. Use a natural fiber such as a loofah sponge or cotton wash cloth and scrub all over your body. When you get out of the tub immediately put on a large robe or towel so you will continue to sweat for a while.

Far Infrared Sauna -- I have one of these and can confirm that this type of sauna can really make you sweat and at lower temperatures than conventional saunas. One of the most important pathways for eliminating toxins is through the skin by sweating. Below is an article about far infrared saunas to give you a little more information about them.

Warming Up To Far Infrared (heavy metal detox)

Sweating is so important in removing toxins. Keeping your skin clean and free from chemical based cosmetics and perfumes will improve your health as well. The skin can absorb toxins just as well as it can release them. When you put chemicals on the skin it is absorbed directly into your body.

**Whenever you cause sweating, such as mentioned above, your body is depleted of minerals. Always take an electrolite drink and a mineral supplement to replace lost minerals. You can drink mineral water while in the sauna or bath. You can create an electrolite drink using 1/4 teaspoon sea salt and 1/2 lime or lemon sqeezed in a glass of water. Doesn't taste so good but it works. You may add a little orange juice or apple juice to sweeten it up a little bit. This is very important. Don't begin any sweating program without planning a way to replace the minerals that are lost.**
