Natural Cures and Remedies for Fibromyalgia (FMS)

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder in which the cause is still unknown. There are many theories going around about what causes this condition but no solid answers have been found. Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are often connected. People are feeling symptoms that go with both of these health problems.

Some possible causes are:

  • Viral or bacterial infection
  • Emotional stress or trauma
  • Imbalance of cortisol and growth hormone
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbances
  • Low levels of serotonin
  • Poor immune system
  • Adrenal exhaustion
  • Mercury or other heavy metal poisoning
  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Candida albicans
  • Allergies
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypoglycemia

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Symptoms of fibromyalgia include generalized muscular pain and tender points. The pain can be felt all over or it may be localized in the neck and shoulders or the legs, etc. People with FMS say that there is almost always some pain present.

There is also fatigue and lack of energy along with a type of exhaustion that is felt when coming down with the flu. It has been proven that people with fibromyalgia have an abnormal sleep pattern and never really experience quality deep sleep. Thus the constant feeling of being tired.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain worsening with exertion
  • Memory problems
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ

How is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed?

When being diagnosed your doctor will test 18 tender points on your body. If there are 11 or more, you have fibromyalgia. Here is a Web page that shows where these 18 points are.

Below are some supplements and herbs that will help control pain and increase energy:

Free Form Amino Acids -- The first supplement is free form amino acids. It has been discovered that people with FMS are unable to digest protein properly. Proteins when digested break down into amino acids. Amino acids are used by the body to create enzymes, are involved in the growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues, they help to balance blood sugar, they are important to the proper functioning of the immune system, they are involved in the production of different hormones and more.

I have fibromyalgia also and can tell you that free form amino acids have helped me more than anything else I have taken. For better effect you should take MSM along with the amino acids. Remember the amino acids have to be free form as this form takes no digestion but can be utilized by your body immediately.

MSM -- MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) is a naturally-occurring sulfur compound found in our bodies. It is in most fresh fruits and vegetables but is easily destroyed by cooking and processing. Sulpher is deficient in people with FMS. It helps reduce pain and is effective as an anti-inflammatory. Lot's of people with FMS pain have reported improvement by taking MSM. It works synergistically with free form amino acids and is most beneficial when they are taken together.

Malic Acid -- Malic Acid is very helpful in relieving both fatigue and muscle pain. Below is an article about it's use in treating FMS.

Malic Acid and Fibromyalgia

As a plus, taking Malic Acid is especially effective at decreasing aluminum toxicity in the brain which has been found to be one of the causes of Alzheimer's.

Vitamin D -- There has been some research recently that links Vitamin D deficiency to fibromyalgia. Some of the symptoms of deficiency include muscle weakness and bone and muscle pain. Some people with fibromyalgia have shown great improvement after supplementation. The best form of Vitamin D is D3. The article below has more information about this deficiency and how much Vitamin D you should take.

A New Epidemic of Vitamin D Deficiency

GABA and Ornithine -- Taking both ornithine and GABA can help you get a good night's sleep. Ornithine can also strengthen the immune system and it is known to assist in removing ammonia from the body.

Niacin -- If you have a circulation problem, niacin (not niacinamide) is very helpful. You will experience a flushing sensation that helps to relieve pain and dilates the blood vessels. Start out taking only 100 mg and then increase it as you feel comfortable up to 500 mg. The flush can be quite intense if you take too much too fast. Your body will gradually get used to each increase.

Coenzyme Q10 -- Coenzyme Q10 can help with immune function and tissue oxygenation which can ease the pain.

Cayenne Pepper -- If you are not allergic to cayenne pepper, it is great for pain relief and for improving circulation. I also use if for headaches sometimes and it either reduces the pain or gets rid of the pain altogether.

Finally, you can improve your fibromyalgia symptoms by boosting your immune system. It is found that most people with FMS poor functioning immune systems. Go to my Boosting Your Immune System Web page for more information.

Angela --
SAM-E has really been helpful for me. I started using it about six months ago because one of my friends suggested it to me as her aunt was using it. Her aunt said that her naturopath had recommended it to her. Anyway, It has helped tremendously in reducing my pain and giving me more energy.

From Julia --
If you suffer from Fibromyalgia I highly recommend taking a bath in some cups of Epsom Salt to absorb the Magnesium Sulfate. This way of soaking helps to balance the lack of Magnesium that causes fibro. I prefer the new product REV for epsom salt, because I think they have the strongest and also most natural formula. You can get it at CVS. They have 3 different packages. I use the red box. Good luck.
