A disease which includes extreme pain in the joints and muscles along with fatigue is known as Fibromyalgia. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this disease harms about 2 percent of the population of U.S. and it is seven times more frequent in women than in men. It has a link with various other inflammatory diseases. In accordance with the Nature Reviews Rheumatology article of 2009, 50 percent of the patients having systemic lupus erythematous and 20 percent of the people having rheumatoid arthritis also suffer from Fibromyalgia.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, despite the fact that Fibromyalgia is majorly characterized by fatigue and extreme muscular pain, there are also a huge number of symptoms for it too. These symptoms consist of:

• Tension headaches
• Migraine
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Morning stiffness
• Gastroesophageal reflux disorder
• Sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises

Fatigue or sleeping disturbances are common symptoms that as well. Individuals with fibromyalgia usually wake up feeling extremely tired, even if they sleep for a very long time. Additionally, sleep is disrupted by excessive pain. Patients suffering from fibromyalgia can develop sleep disorders as well such as sleep apnea, which makes symptoms worse.

There isn’t a lot of information available about the major cause for Fibromyalgia. There is an on-going debate related to the fact as to whether this condition is a disease in reality which could be treated and defined in a clear way or if it is a disease of catch all diagnosis that has its basis on the clinical criteria which is vague in accordance with the Nature Reviews Rheumatology article.

According to the Mayo Clinic there is also a concept by the experts that there is a link of Fibromyalgia with viral infections, genetics, repetitive injuries, post traumatic disorders or a mixture of all these diseases.

For the treatment of Fibromyalgia there are a number of medications which include:
• Pregablin
• Anti-seizure drug
• Anti depressants
• Milnacipran
• Duloxetine

These medicines have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. According to the Mayo Clinic the function of these medicines is to raise the amount of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain and they can help in relieving the disease through the dampening of the exaggerated reaction to pain signs of the brain. In order to relieve the pain and stiffness that is caused by Fibromyalgia, the over-the-counter painkillers like the acetaminophen and no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be used.

Because there are a range of symptoms for Fibromyalgia there is often a mixture of different treatments which is recommended together with the medication. In 2010 a study was conducted in the Johns Hopkins University which demonstrated that even the short bouts of medium physical activity like yard work, brisk walks, and the frequent use of stairs can enhance the symptoms of the Fibromyalgia without having on the patients any physical or mental stress.

There are also a number of homeopathic treatments available for the Fibromyalgia but the need to have more high quality trails in them. Acupuncture is another alternate therapy for Fibromyalgia which has produced good results. But there is still an uncertainty in its usage for Fibromyalgia. Medications can also be used to decrease pain and enhance sleeping patterns. Popular choices include:-

• Analgesics: - Acetaminophen eases pain along with stiffness but its effectiveness greatly varies. Tramadol can be taken with it as well to relive pain. Doctors can prescribe NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium to decrease inflammation.

• Antidepressants such as Duloxetine and Savella can be used to ease pain or fatigue. Prozac can also be prescribed to assist in promoting sleep.

• Anti-seizure medications: - Medications that are designed to cure epilepsy are useful in decreasing pain. Gabapentin is helpful in decreasing fibromyalgia symptoms. It is also the first drug that was approved by the FDA to cure fibromyalgia.

Even though these medications have proven to be successful, it is essential to implement numerous lifestyle changes as well such as:-

• Sleeping on a regular basis. This is very important especially that fatigue is considered to be one of fibromyalgia’s main characteristics. Daytime napping should also be limited and it is essential to wake up and go to sleep every day at the same exact timing to regulate sleeping patterns.

• Exercising on a regular basis. Even though this is going to increase pain and fatigue, doing it in a gradual manner is going to decrease symptoms over time. Some of the appropriate exercises include walking, swimming, and aerobics.

SAM-E has really been helpful for me. I started using it about six months ago because one of my friends suggested it to me as her aunt was using it. Her aunt said that her naturopath had recommended it to her. Anyway, It has helped tremendously in reducing my pain and giving me more energy.

If you suffer from Fibromyalgia I highly recommend taking a bath in some cups of Epsom Salt to absorb the Magnesium Sulfate. This way of soaking helps to balance the lack of Magnesium that causes fibro. I prefer the new product REV for epsom salt, because I think they have the strongest and also most natural formula. You can get it at CVS. They have 3 different packages. I use the red box. Good luck.
