Natural Cures and Remedies for Headaches

Different Types of Headaches, Their Symptoms and Causes

Headaches are pain that individuals experience in the head and neck region. The tissue in the bran is extremely sensitive to excessive pain due to it lacking any pain receptors. The pain is a result of disturbance that takes place to structures that are pain-sensitive around the human brain. The periosteum surrounding muscles, skull, eyes, arteries, and nerves can also become seriously inflamed and irritated when a headache takes place.

Patients can experience different levels of pain ranging from dull, throbbing, mild, and intense. Headaches can also develop to migraines, which lead to more pain. Symptoms of headaches and migraines include nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, inability to sleep, and difficulties in vision. Headaches can take place for an hour or a couple of days depending on the reasons behind it and whether any other medical problems are present. Headaches are triggered by various lifestyle factors such as:-

• Excessively drinking alcohol, especially red wines.
• Certain types of foods like processed meats consisting of nitrates.
• Irregular sleeping patterns or not getting enough sleep.
• Poor posture.
• Not consuming enough nutrients.
• Stress and anxiety.
• Certain types of medications especially the ones used for heart diseases.
• Physical stress. These stressors are going to cause skull muscles to clench teeth and spasm.
• Prolonged manual work like sitting on a computer for a very long time.
• Genetics play a significant role especially if there is a history of headaches or migraines in the family.

Even though headaches usually disappear within a couple of minutes or hours, there is always a chance that symptoms are going to increase and become more painful. This is always a sign that other medical issues can be present. Some of these symptoms are:-

• Confusion.
• Have problems understanding speech.
• Fainting once or twice per day.
• High fever.
• Numbness and weakness.
• Paralysis on a part of the body.
• Stiff neck.
• Trouble seeing.
• Having trouble walking.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Breathing abnormalities.
• Consciousness loss.
• Balance problems.
• Personality changes. However, this is mainly due to the pain and irritation that many patients go through when they suffer from headaches.

It is recommended to consult with a doctor if the headache doesn’t disappear on its own. The diagno-sis is going to be done first by the patient explaining their medical history to the doctor. The doctor is then going to numerous questions to be able to make the right diagnosis. These questions are also help the doctor understanding the quality, pain duration, along with the quantity of associated symp-toms.

Individuals suffering from tensions headaches complain about pain and pressure being mild or moderate. The pain is located on both the head’s sides and gets worse with any activity. It is essential to inform the doctor as well if other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity are present.

The doctor is going to perform a physical examine, especially a neurologic examination, if the head-ache is causing a lot of pain and interfering with the regular activities of the patient. If doctors find any abnormalities in the neurologic exam, there is a high possibility that a serious medical problem is present. This also might mean that the patient is suffering from a nerve infection. Additionally, blood tests, urinalysis, CT scans, and an MRI might be performed to diagnose headaches as well.

These tests are used for individuals suffering from other medical conditions such as diabetes or infections that cause headaches. A CT scan is a test that involves X-rays and is used to create cross-section images of the head and body. The scan might also be used to rule out if the patient is suffering from other medi-cal conditions, especially in the head.

There are various medications that can help in curing headaches such as aspirin, ibuprofen like advil, and acetaminophen like Tylenol. Additionally, alternative therapies can also be used such as mediation, relaxation techniques, behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and massaging the head. Even though these medications and therapeutic techniques can be effective, it is essential to implement numerous lifestyle changes to prevent headaches.

These lifestyle changes include:-

• Nourishing the body:- Keeping the body hydrated on a regular basis has been proven to prevent headaches and decrease the associated symptoms. This is very important as individuals who suffer from headaches on a continuous basis are vulnerable to dehydration effects.
• Avoiding triggers such as alcohol and maintain a healthy diet.
• Exercising on a regular basis. This is very important for individuals who suffer from migraines. This also includes using relaxation techniques such as yoga.
• Reducing and avoiding stress.

Your Favorite Cures or Remedies:

From Lena: I used to be a chronic migraine sufferer. I am now 57 years old and from my experience, migraines can be avoided if one takes a little fresh ginger root (peeled) with a pinch of rock salt or plain salt, during or after a meal or at least once a day. In India, we drink tea in which ginger & cardamom have been boiled. This is good for digestion. Most of us do not connect the stomach with pain in the head. I have observed that if food is not digested, it affects the head. Same goes with drinking cold drinks or eating chilled food on an empty stomach. If you are starving (migraines also occur when one does not eat when hungry), eat only warm food. Fruit juice should be avoided at breakfast time. In the West it is common to combine milk and fruit juice for breakfast. This is wrong. Milk plus juice, specially citrus juice, curdles in the stomach. Fruits and juice are best taken separately between 10 and 11 am. Hope this helps.
