Natural Cures and Remedies for Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that refers to have difficulties falling asleep or sleeping in a regular manner. Individuals suffering from insomnia usually experience these symptoms:-
• Waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep again.
• Feeling exhausted when waking up and not being able to function in a normal manner.
• Difficulties going to sleep.
• Waking up in very early hours.

Insomnia is considered to be both a symptom of other medical problems or an illness of its own. For example, individuals who suffer from heart problems or social anxiety can suffer from insomnia. Insomnia can take place at different ages, but it is more common at older ages especially that this is when people are going to encounter stressful events in their life.

However, there are individuals who have a higher possibility of having insomnia such as individuals with a history of psychological or mental problems like depression, individuals going through emotional stress, and individuals who are older than sixty years old.

The length of insomnia can vary from one person to another as well where someone can suffer from insomnia for a few days and someone else might suffer from it for the rest of their life. If an individual is suffering from insomnia because of a medical issue, then the condition is going to disappear as soon as the medical condition is cured. Insomnia that lasts for longer than one month is characterized as chronic insomnia and can lead to hallucinations or mental breakdown. Insomnia can also lead to depression, anxiety, memory problems, fatigue, concentration problems, an increase in cholesterol levels, and other health problems. There are many causes that lead to insomnia such as:-

• Stressful live events such as losing jobs, death of someone close, and divorce.
• Illnesses such as cancer or heart diseases.
• Emotional and physical discomfort.
• Environmental factors such as noise and extreme temperatures. For example, individuals who move to a cold country with temperatures they’re not used to can suffer from insomnia.
• Some types of medications especially the ones used to cure cold, high fever, and allergies.
• Interferences in sleep schedules due to situations such as jet lag where sleeping hours of individuals change due to them travelling to another time zone.
• Pain and discomfort during the night.
• Lifestyle habits such as drinking alcohol and caffeine excessively or not exercising.
• Smoking. Nicotine leads to individuals staying awake and alert which can greatly affect sleeping patterns.

There are various treatments available but they vary depending on the level of insomnia. Acute insomnia doesn’t require any treatment and the condition is most likely going to go on its own. Many doctors can suggest sleeping pills if acute insomnia is causing patients not to be able to function during the day and is leading to them feeling tired all the time. However, this is going to differ from one doctor to another as many of them don’t recommend pills and will suggest other treatments.

On the other hand, treatments for advanced conditions include treating any conditions and health problems leading to insomnia first. Behavioural approaches can assist in curing insomnia and promoting regular sleeping as well. There is also of evidence that behavioural therapy can be effective in treating insomnia especially that most patients learn effective sleeping habits and modify numerous misconceptions or expectations. These misconceptions include sleeping expectations that are unrealistic such as having to sleep eight hours per night.

Additionally, techniques like reconditioning and relaxation exercises are useful in curing insomnia and are recommended by doctors. Lifestyle changes can also assist in curing insomnia. For example, it is essential to avoid excess caffeine and alcohol as they are stimulants to stay awake. Alcohol can also make people wake up in the middle of the night and making it very difficult to go back to sleep.

It is recommended to exercise on a regular basis as well. However, experts advise not exercising at all for four to five hours before going to sleep. Additionally, bedrooms should be made comfortable all the time. Before going to sleep, individuals suffering from insomnia should make sure that the room is dark and quiet, without being too cold or hot. This is definitely going to help patients in sleeping in a regular manner.

Even though most these treatments are effective, there is always a possibility that individuals can suffer from insomnia again. This is more apparent if individuals don’t follow these treatments or implement lifestyle changes on the long run.
