Superfoods
What are superfoods and why are they essential to good health?
In researching super foods I found that there are several different lists and opinions on which foods fit in this category. I have tried to put together what I think are the best.
Super foods are particularly high in nutrients such as antioxidants, phytonutrients, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, trace minerals, fatty acids, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), chlorophyll and more. They promote good health, are anticancer, detoxify the body, boost the immune system, are anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, increase energy and help in the healing process. They are also considered to be anti-aging.
Some people include foods such as apples, carrots and broccoli in the super food category. These are great foods to eat, however, when I talk about super foods, I mean foods that stand out far from the ordinary foods that we eat on a day-to-day basis. These are foods that are amazing in their benefits and nutrition they supply. They are especially helpful to people who have chronic health problems. In fact, if it weren't for super foods I'm not sure if I would have been able to improve as much as I have.
So what are these foods? Below you will find out what I think are true super foods and why they are so special.
Chlorella -- Helps remove heavy metals and pesticides from the body, promotes a balanced pH, improves digestion, boosts the immune system, protects the liver and supplies complete nutrition. Because chlorella is a complete food, it is almost impossible to take too much. It has a strong detoxifying effect on the body. It increases red blood cells and helps transport oxygen. Chlorella has been shown to combat cancer as it increases the level of interferon through the stimulation of the activity of macrophages and T-cells. It balances blood sugar and helps regulate blood pressure. It also helps improve brain function. Chlorella is a green single-celled micro algae that contains the highest concentrations of chlorophyll anywhere. Chlorella supplies high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin B-12, iron, RNA and DNA, and protein. Chlorella is nutrient-dense and provides more than 20 different vitamins and minerals and 18 amino acids. About a third of those who try chlorella can't tolerate it. It is possible this is due to a cellulase deficiency. If you have trouble with chlorella, you could try supplementing with cellulase.
Spirulina -- Spirulina is also a micro algae and is very high in protein. Just like chlorella it is rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12. Other nutrients include B vitamins, fatty acid GLA and other essential fatty acids, antioxidants and lots of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Spirulina has been shown in research to inhibit HIV. Like chlorella, spirulina also boosts the immune system. Recent studies have shown spirulina may protect against allergic reactions. It's a great protein supplement for those who cannot obtain sufficient protein through diet because of digestive disorders. Because of its simple form the nutrients in spirulina are easily assimilated. Spirulina is an excellent tonic for the liver and may protect against liver damage and cirrhosis in people with chronic hepatitis. It has strong antioxidant properties and is useful in preventing cancer or helping those with cancer.
In buying chlorella and spirulina be sure to get high quality products from a reputable company. There is the possibility of contaminants in these algaes if not properly farmed.
Barley Grass and Wheat Grass -- Barley grass and wheat grass are the young green grasses that later become the cereal grains barley and wheat. These grasses contain the most balanced nutrient profile in green plants. They have an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, proteins, active enzymes, and chlorophyll. Very much like spirulina and chlorella above. Researchers at the University of California and George Washington University have found that barley grass juice contains antioxidants superoxide dismutase or SOD, 2"-O-glycosylisovitexin and vitamin E succinate. Each of these phytochemicals have been shown to help prevent lipid peroxidation caused by free-radicals. Both grasses are great in detoxing the body, improving digestion, preventing cancer, diabetes and heart disease, curing constipation, detoxifying heavy metals from the bloodstream and cleansing the liver.
Barley grass literally saved my life when I was so sick with constant diarrhea, insomnia, anxiety and just overall horrible health. I started drinking barley grass several times a day and improved dramatically in just a week.
Bee Pollen and Royal Jelly -- Bee pollen is said to be nature's most complete food and is the richest source of vitamins found in nature in a single food. There are actually some elements in bee pollen that science cannot identify. The amount of rejuvenating nutrients in bee pollen exceeds those present in brewer's yeast and wheat germ. Bee pollen is used to help those with nutrient deficiencies and chronic health problems. Bee pollen is extremely rich in rutin and is helpful in strengthening the capillaries. Like chlorella, it also supplies the nucleic acids RNA and DNA. Clinical tests have proven bee pollen to be effective in combating the effects of hay fever and other airborne allergens. It has been used to increase energy and stamina. It has a high concentration of amino acids and immune building properties.
Royal jelly is equal to bee pollen in nutrition. Studies have show its effectiveness in helping with accelerating the healing process, anxiety, insomnia, atherosclerosis, bronchial asthma, pancreatitis, arthritis, kidney diseases, stomach ulcers, ovarian insufficiency, reversing the aging process, liver diseases, regenerating the nervous system and promoting sexual health. Whether you take bee pollen or royal jelly is up to you. They are both equally nutritious and beneficial to your health.
Other super food lists include goji berries, blueberries, carrots, apples, tomatoes, onions, garlic, broccoli, flaxseed, yogurt, greens, nuts and seeds, eggs, etc. All are great foods and should be included in your diet. But the true super foods are shown above and are in a category by themselves.
